Paper Jamz Guitar, the Christmas gift for 2010, well that’s what everyone is saying anyway and the speed at which these things are flying out of the shops I think they may well be right.

But what exactly is a Paper Jamz Guitar anyway? When we started to look for these we thought they may actually be made of paper and thought they wouldn’t last long with our five year old. In fact they are made from a robust plastic with a paper covering to resemble a guitar neck and fret board. The one thing you shouldn’t get mixed up with is these are not real guitars. They don’t have any strings and although you can play cords and single notes on them they are not any use in teach how to play a guitar.
The manufacturer’s say that the Paper Jamz Guitar is the only affordable and innovative play instrument with circuit-embedded paper that lets you play by simply touching the paper surface. The guitars have three different playing modes; perfect play, rhythm mode and freestyle. The first two are simply playing along with the three songs included with the guitar but it’s the freestyle that I thought interesting. The freestyle mode says you can play real chords and allows you to play any song but maybe it was my adult sized fingers but it wasn’t that great for me. The kids however loved it and thought they were real rock stars playing in the freestyle mode and I must admit they did seem to get a better sound from the freestyle than I could.
If you are going to get one of these I would highly recommend you buy the guitar strap that goes with it. It cost £4.99 and when added to the guitar it allows the kids to walk about with it strapped around heir shoulder like a real guitar. This not only helps with getting them out of the room when you’ve had enough but will also prevent the paper jamz guitar beings smashed as they swing it about, it is rather light weight

From the paper jamz stuff listed above available from Amazon you can see there are 5 different paper jamz guitars, a paper jamz amp and a paper jamz drum kit. What they don’t have that I think is a wonderful idea is headphones. The guitar comes with a jack point to plug in the paper jamz amp but it also can take headphones so if they do start to love their new paper jamz guitar simply plug in the headphones and let them strum away with a single noise being heard your side, assuming they don’t try to sing along.
